A former District of Columbia councilmember has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison for stealing more than $350,000 in government funds. Harry Thomas Jr. was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Washington. Prosecutors had asked for a term of nearly four years. Thomas’ lawyers requested an 18-month prison sentence. Thomas pleaded guilty in January to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars earmarked for youth sports and arts programs. Thomas had been a longtime advocate for youth sports. He resigned his seat after the charges were filed, and submitted a letter of apology before the sentencing hearing.
