After attaining the rank of general on Aug. 7, Via, a Virginia native, was named as the commander of the Army Material Command (AMC) a week later. Via’s promotion makes him only the second Army officer to achieve this feat since World War II, reports the Afro-American.

As head of the AMC, Via’s duties include overseeing the Army’s technological and material development arm. This also includes having a say in the development and testing of rations, weapons, vehicles and any other devices and apparatuses the Army will provide to its soldiers.
