Golden Globe® Award-winner and Academy Award®-nominee Angela Bassett and nine-time Grammy®-winning recording artist Mary J. Blige will be in the upcoming Lifetime Original Movie “Betty & Coretta”. This movie aptly describes the friendship  of the great women.

The film, premiered Saturday, February 2 at 8.7c, will tell the dual real-life stories of Coretta Scott King (Bassett) and Dr. Betty Shabazz (Blige) as they create an unbreakable life-long bond after their husbands’ tragic assassinations.

Here are real facts about the two powerful  inspiring women.

  • They both were into the arts. Coretta was an Opera Singer Betty was a dancer.

  • Betty graduated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and Coretta  won a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
  • Both  had tragic ends to their lives. Coretta Scott King’s  cause of her death is believed to be respiratory failure due to complications from ovarian cancer. Betty Shabazz suffered severe burns and died on June 23, 1997 as a result of a fire set by her grandson.
  • After her husband’s assassination in 1965, Betty Shabazz went on to a career in university administration and activism.As leader of the movement, Mrs. King founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta. She served as the center’s president and CEO from its inception until she passed the reins of leadership to son Dexter Scott King.
