A close-up of ground beef

According to NBC News, a potential E. coli contamination has triggered the recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products.

The recalled meat, which was produced by Wolverine Packing Company of Detroit, has been linked to 11 people being sickened with E. coli O157:H7 infections, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

E. coli O157:H7 is a dangerous type of germ that can cause severe food poisoning, and, in some cases, a deadly complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. Children and the elderly tend to be the most vulnerable.

E. coli O157 symptoms can include:

  • Dehydration
  • Nausea
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping

Though recovery general occurs within a week, HUS can lead to kidney failure and death.
