Israel Houghton returns to the scene today with his newest album, Love God. Love People. The project has been highly publicized, primarily because it was created in London’s famed Abbey Road Studios, the birthplace of much of the Beatles’ historic music.

Produced by Houghton, with Aaron Lindsey and Tommy Sims, the magic and wonder of the recording space can definitely be heard in this musical body of work. One might criticize it, though, as it likely showcases more musicality than the average consumer can appreciate or follow. Still, while Abbey Road may not carry as much significance for the gospel community as it does for Israel personally, there’s something quite cool about knowing that this project is unlike others in our genre.

The album opens with the title track, full of funk and a banging beat, before transitioning to another stand-out, “Yahweh.” This tune is energetic and full of vocal/instrumental nuances that make you wanna listen multiple times in a row, just to ensure that you’ve heard it all. Up next, is “Love Rev,” with a fun 60′s Motown/British invasion chorus (with a bit of a doo-wop vibe) that you’d expect to have been created at Abbey Road.

Other standout tracks are “That’s Why I Love You,” a mellow, jazzy groove that makes you wanna snap your fingers and fall in love with God all over again, and “You Hold My World,” a heart-wrenchingly performed ode to God’s faithfulness (the song’s build is captivating).

Israel’s also got some solid, but understated guest performances from his industry peers– the upbeat and dance-ready “Mercies,” features Kirk Franklin. With its Earth Wind & Fire kind of vibe, it’s just screaming for a skate party. The collabo is so seamless and natural that the song could easily have fit on an album by Kirk, too. Then there’s “Surprises,” with Fred Hammond giving a vocal that is higher and lighter than we’ve come to expect from him, along with a bass-heavy vamp that showcases Hammond’s musicianship in a way that we don’t always get to hear.

Perhaps one of the most powerful songs on the entire project is the one that ends it– ”Hosanna (Be Lifted Higher).” In various sections of the song, the tune is as pure and innocent as the children’s choir singing behind it, before becoming as intricate as the background vocals supplied by a cappella wonder-group Take 6. It’s the type of song that should/will be sung at an outdoor crusade by about 40,000 people at once. At over 8 minutes in length, “Hosanna” is over-the-top grand. And rightly so– it’s a cry of praise to an over-the-top grand God.

In sum, Love God. Love People. is certainly more experimental than any other project he’s done. If Houghton’s Real album bothered fans of the praise & worship New Breed sound, this one is gonna drive them crazy. There’s hardly anything that most churches will be adding to their Sunday morning repertoires, butIsrael has never claimed to be a limited to what we define as “worship music.” In my estimation, he’s always explored the more creative side of himself in a way that is uninhibited and undefined.

The masterful production and simply “good music” found on this project is reason enough for any true music lover to grab it. The fact that we can have it, and know that it’s about an infinitely creative God (who expresses His creativity in innumerable ways)… that’s a bonus. Worth a purchase.

This comes back to me every year about this time, as lots of parents I know get ready to send their kids off to college. College is a new experience for so many of these kids. Parents who have done their best to provide a strong faith foundation end up anxiously wondering if their kids will keep the values taught to them, or continue going to service, or if they’ll give up their faith. Overall, there are plenty of worries here that can keep a parent awake at night. How can parents deal with this anxiety? Is there anything we can do to help our away-at-school kids stay strong in the faith?

Here are seven ways to encourage your child in Faith.

Encourage your child to introduce himself or herself to others after Mass or Service or to attend events sponsored by their chapels in an effort to meet people who may be interested in attending Mass together in the future.

Encourage your child to inquire about the different types of faith available services at their college. Colleges often have youth run prayer groups and that are especially crowded and it can be a good way to meet people, as well.

Encourage your child to become a become a member of the evangelization team on campus. It’s a good way to meet a new group of people and a chance to participate in Mass in a new way.

Let your child know it’s OK to look for a church in the surrounding neighborhood, if he or she is not comfortable at or has a scheduling conflict with the services on campus.

Let your child know that you’re praying for him or her in a way that makes them feel loved. Give them a small prayer card or medal or a stone from a holy place, etc. — something that symbolizes the faith in a way that isn’t showy. Your child may throw it in a drawer for a while, but may come across it again at just the right time and find that it is a reminder of the faith and of your faith in him or her.

Encourage your child to find new ways to pray — while running, hiking, camping, before studying.

Encourage your child to explore volunteer opportunities through campus ministry. Often, there are many service groups that are filled with members looking to incorporate spirituality and service.

The cult of “freedom at any cost ” may not be as strong as it once was, but even on strict campuses, other forces — apathy, confusion, the widespread idea that one opinion is as good as any other, immaturity, peer pressure, hormones, and Jack Daniels and his friends — stand ready to evangelize.

Forty-seven years ago this weekend, on a sweltering August day often remembered simply as the March on Washington, my father delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial. A memorial to him is being erected at the Tidal Basin, not far from where he shared his vision of a nation united in justice, equality and brotherhood.

This weekend Glenn Beck is to host a “Restoring Honor” rally at the Lincoln Memorial. While it is commendable that this rally will honor the brave men and women of our armed forces, who serve our country with phenomenal dedication, it is clear from the timing and location that the rally’s organizers present this event as also honoring the ideals and contributions of Martin Luther King Jr.

I would like to be clear about what those ideals are.

Vast numbers of Americans know of my father’s leadership in opposing segregation. Yet too many believe that his dream was limited to achieving racial equality. Certainly he sought that objective, but his vision was about more than expanding rights for a single race. He hoped that even in the direst circumstances, we could overcome our differences and replace bitter conflicts with greater understanding, reconciliation and cooperation.

My father championed free speech. He would be the first to say that those participating in Beck’s rally have the right to express their views. But his dream rejected hateful rhetoric and all forms of bigotry or discrimination, whether directed at race, faith, nationality, sexual orientation or political beliefs. He envisioned a world where all people would recognize one another as sisters and brothers in the human family. Throughout his life he advocated compassion for the poor, nonviolence, respect for the dignity of all people and peace for humanity.

Although he was a profoundly religious man, my father did not claim to have an exclusionary “plan” that laid out God’s word for only one group or ideology. He marched side by side with members of every religious faith. Like Abraham Lincoln, my father did not claim that God was on his side; he prayed humbly that he was on God’s side.

He did, however, wholeheartedly embrace the “social gospel.” His spiritual and intellectual mentors included the great theologians of the social gospel Walter Rauschenbush and Howard Thurman. He said that any religion that is not concerned about the poor and disadvantaged, “the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them and the social conditions that cripple them[,] is a spiritually moribund religion awaiting burial.” In his “Dream” speech, my father paraphrased the prophet Amos, saying, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

The title of the 1963 demonstration, “The Great March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom,” reflected his belief that the right to sit at a lunch counter would be hollow if African Americans could not afford the meal. The need for jobs and shared economic prosperity remains as urgent and compelling as it was 47 years ago. My father’s vision would include putting millions of unemployed Americans to work, rebuilding our tattered infrastructure and reforms to reduce pollution and better care for the environment.

In my efforts to help realize my father’s dream, supporting justice, freedom and human rights for all people, I have conducted nonviolence workshops and outreach in communities across this country and numerous other nations. My experiences affirm the enduring truth of my father’s words: that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” and that “we are all bound together in a single garment of destiny.”

I pray that all Americans will embrace the challenge of social justice and the unifying spirit that my father shared with his compatriots. With this commitment, we can begin to find new ways to reach out to one another, to heal our divisions, and build bridges of hope and opportunity benefiting all people. In so doing, we will not merely be seeking the dream; we will at long last be living it.

(CNN: Belief Blog) Long before last week’s revelation that a large and growing chunk of Americans believe that the President is Muslim – and that only about one in three Americans correctly identify him as Christian – Barack Obama was battling misperceptions about his religion.

In early 2008, right as Obama was in desperate need of a win in the South Carolina primaries – he’d beaten Hillary Clinton in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses but lost to her in subsequent contests in New Hampshire and Iowa – false rumors swirled that he was Muslim.

Obama’s father was raised in a Muslim household, though the presidential candidate had repeatedly called him an agnostic, and Obama had spent time attending an Indonesian school where most students were Muslim. An e-mail smear campaign alleged that the White House hopeful was disguising his true faith.

In South Carolina, whose primaries were Obama’s first electoral test in the Bible Belt, that was a big problem.

Less than a week before South Carolina’s primary, Obama began calling media outlets with large Christian audiences to set the record straight. His first such interview was with Beliefnet, where I was then political editor.

With Thursday’s Pew poll showing that nearly one in five Americans think Obama is Muslim, our conversation from 2008 – conducted by phone while the future president sat aboard his grounded campaign plane – has become relevant again.

Here’s what Obama told me in 2008 when I mentioned the false rumors that he was Muslim:

Let me just sort of be as clear as possible in terms of what that the background is.

You know, I was raised basically by my mother, who came from a Christian background – small- town, white, Midwesterner. But, she was not particularly religious. My father, who I did not know – I spent a month of my life in his presence, otherwise he was a stranger to me – was raised in a household where his father had converted to Islam. But my father, for all practical purposes, was agnostic.

My mother remarried an Indonesian and we moved to Indonesia. But for two years I went to a Catholic school in Indonesia, and then for two years went to a secular school in Indonesia. The majority of children there were Muslim. But it wasn’t a religious school.

So almost all the facts that have been presented in the scurrilous emails are wrong. And I’ve been a member of my church now for almost 20 years and have never been a person of the Muslim faith.

Clear enough. Obama had almost zero contact with his tacitly Muslim father and had been a committed Christian for decades.

But Obama also used our chat to make a case that his exposure to Islam, through his extended family and during his four years in Indonesia, made him unusually well suited to heal the rifts that had opened between the U.S. and the Muslim world over President George W. Bush’s war on terror:

…I absolutely believe that having lived in a country that was majority Muslim for a time and having distant relatives in Africa who are Muslim, that I’m less likely to demonize the Muslim faith and more likely to understand that they are ordinary folks who are trying to figure out how to live their lives and raise their kids and prosper just like anybody else. And I do think that that cultural understanding is something that could be extremely valuable.

He elaborated on this argument elsewhere in our conversation, in comments that would foreshadow his administration’s efforts on Muslim outreach:

I do think that for the average Arab or Indonesian or Nigerian or Asian Muslim on the street that my familiarity with their culture would have an impact. I think that they would view America differently if I were president. Now, that is not just symbolic. That is something that could be used in a constructive way to open greater dialogue between the West and the Islamic world, and that ultimately could make us more safe.

In recent days, two major themes from my conversation with Obama – misunderstandings about his faith and his vision for improving U.S.-Muslim relations – have become the stuff of national headlines.

It was just days before Thursday’s Pew poll revealed growing confusion about Obama’s faith that he’d come out strongly for the rights of Muslims to build an Islamic center and mosque near ground zero.

With the imam behind Park51 – the name of the proposed center – touring the Middle East for the State Department, Obama appears unlikely to back down from his campaign to improve relations with Muslims.

Whether he will step up messaging around his religious faith to Christians, as he did in the days before South Carolina’s caucuses, is still an open question.

It seems like candy has value outside of being a sweet treat. According to the blog JazzaBelle Tresses, products used in candy can actually be used to create beautiful tresses. Caramel, peppermint and licorice are just a few examples of candy products that are used in hair products.

Caramel

A treatment known as the Caramel Hair Treatment has been found to soften and moisturize hair. It’s great for natural hair ladies who might want to loosen the texture of their hair or decrease the amount of shrinkage that occurs after washing the hair. If you are transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair but are still getting relaxers from time to time it helps to extend the amount of time that is needed in between relaxers. This treatment is to be done every 6-8 weeks. The ingredients contained in this product are honey, bananas, olive oil, molasses, water, apple cider vinegar, cornstarch and wheat germ oil. You could easily make this product at home or purchase it.

Peppermint

Malin + Goetz Peppermint Hair Shampoo uses natural peppermint extract to purify and balance the hair without the use of harsh ingredients. Helps to prevent drying, stripping, irritation and build-up.

According to the Dermatology Times, there has been a study that has shown that an active compound extracted from licorice has helped to stop the hair growth in rats. Researchers have found that after three days of treatment there was a reduction in hair growth and after 6-12 days the rat’s hair was nearly completely gone. There were also no signs of irritation or other side effects. This is thought to be done by causing the hair shaft to detach from the follicular wall. Clinical trials for this product will be the next stage for this product.
