Rick Santorum targeted black people at a campaign stop in Iowa on Sunday, saying he doesn’t want to make their lives better by giving them welfare.

According to CBS News, Santorum told a mostly white audience in Sioux City:

“It just keeps expanding – I was in Indianola a few months ago and I was talking to someone who works in the department of public welfare here, and she told me that the state of Iowa is going to get fined if they don’t sign up more people under the Medicaid program,” Santorum said. “They’re just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That’s what the bottom line is.”

He added: “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.”

Maryland Commute on the Beltway Worst in the Country

New study out this morning by the Texas Transportation Institute and reported by the Washington Examiner shows that the morning drive on the outer loop of the Beltway between Route 1 and Georgia Avenue is the third most delayed in the country, only trailing two Los Angeles highways. Drivers on 6.3-mile stretch between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m. spend about 1.8 million hours a year stuck in delays, costing about $38 million in wasted gas and lost productivity. The traffic is so bad most drivers have to double their travel time just to make sure they make it to their destination on time.

Child Murders Getting Tough on Montgomery County

Live Fruitful, Fearless, and Forgiving

In stressful and trying times , it is always good to meditate on the scriptures.The word is where we live and breathe. It is where we gather strength beyond our wildest dreams.

From Mark 11:11-26

On His way from Bethany with the disciples, Jesus felt hungry, and seeing a fig tree in the distance, he went to see if he could find a fruit on it. Since it was not in season, he found nothing but leaves. And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. Arriving in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he taught them, saying, “Is it not written, `My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of thieves.” The chief priests and the scribes heard about it and sought a way to kill him; for they feared him, because the entire multitude was astonished at his teaching. The next day, passing by the fig tree, they saw it withered to its roots. Peter remembered and said to Him, “Master, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered.” And Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, `Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it shall be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

Just think for a moment. Jesus was never afraid of His enemies. On the contrary, it was they who feared Him, because He stood for the truth and the multitudes followed Him. He always knew that we must act on what is right in the appropriate place. The Apostles watched him with genuine concern, often utter confusion and frustration. He taught them to have faith, because it is in one’s total trust in God where true power lies.

He taught them (and us) that it is in constant communication with the Father in prayer that we can develop our faith. And communication with Him will always be clear and invigorating if we bear no ill will against anyone, sustained by a forgiving heart. His message was: it would be better for a man not to exist at all if he was not fruitful and had nothing to offer in his life. In the same way, one must be willing to give up his life to fight for the truth and the principle of his faith.

Grant me, dear God, a heart full of faith in Your love; with courage to drive out of my life what is evil and unjust; with enthusiasm to be fruitful in spreading the Good News of Christ; and forgiveness, to be worthy of His great sacrifice. Amen.

Obama Tells “Underdog” Memphis HS Grads To “Keep Pushing”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rewarded with the president of the United States as their commencement speaker, the graduating seniors at Booker T. Washington High School got the same advice a young Barack Obama once got himself: Keep pushing.

“You’ve always been underdogs,” the president told the cheering students, clad in green and yellow gowns, from a school where academic scores and graduation rates have soared despite tough conditions in the community. “Nobody’s handed you a thing. But that also means that whatever you accomplish in your life, you’ll have earned it,” Obama said.

The high school won a national competition, and Obama’s presence, thanks to its hard-fought academic turnaround. The school is in a gritty south Memphis community where many of its students live in tough neighborhoods beset by crime, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and untreated mental illness. A majority of the students are poor, and some are homeless.

Obama told the smiling seniors: “You’ve shown more grit and determination in your childhoods than a lot of adults ever will.”

The president personalized his graduation message, reminding the students his father left home when he was 2 and his mom raised him amid economic struggles. He said his mother and his grandparents stayed on him to excel.

“I’m lucky they kept pushing,” Obama said. “I’m lucky my teachers kept pushing. Because education made all the difference in my life. And it’s going to make an even greater difference in your lives.”

After putting in place educational innovations and adding variety to its curriculum, the Memphis high school saw its graduation rate jump from 55 percent in 2007 to nearly 82 percent in 2010. Changes at the school include separate freshmen academies for boys and girls and a greater choice of advanced placement classes.

Obama said the whole culture of the school has changed to one of caring and learning.

“That’s why I came here today,” he said. “Because if success can happen here at Booker T. Washington, it can happen anywhere in Memphis. And if it can happen in Memphis, it can happen anywhere in Tennessee. And if can happen anywhere in Tennessee, it can happen all across America.”

Obama seemed to enjoy the moment as much as the students. He said he always treasures commencement ceremonies, but “this one is especially hopeful.” And he thanked the students for inspiring him as president.

Obama spoke after privately offering comfort to Memphis area families affected by the Mississippi River’s flooding; his trip had been scheduled before the flooding occurred.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama met with the flood victims, local officials and first responders for about 35 minutes. Nanny Williams, an unemployed mother living with her daughter and granddaughter, described being flooded out of her house, forcing her family into a community shelter, Carney said. Another woman, Rose Hunt, told the president that prayer spared her house which became a refuge for her son, who had to abandon his home.

Snow melt and rain that have sent a torrent of water down the Mississippi, topping levees and forcing flooding along its path. The river crested at Memphis last week, just inches short of the record set in 1937. Some low-lying neighborhoods were inundated, but the city’s high levees protected much of the rest of Memphis.

Having grown up in church, we’ve endured many a heartfelt personal testimony that, from the outside, seemed absolutely hilarious. However we never saw anything quite like Treemonisha.

The Tomb Is Empty

Jesus not only died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3); he also, by the grace of God, tasted death for every one (Hebrews 2:9). It was a real death that put an end to his earthly human existence. Jesus died in mid afternoon and the Sabbath began at 6:00 pm. Since the Jewish law permitted no work on the Sabbath, the body had to be buried quickly. Someone brave enough would have to get permission from the Roman authorities to take the body and bury it. The bodies of executed criminals were usually left unburied as carion for the vultures and dogs. Jesus was spared this indignity through the gracious intervention of Joseph of Arimethea. Who was this admirer and secret disciple of Jesus? Luke tells us that Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish council that condemned Jesus. We are told that he did not agree with their verdict. He was either absent from their meeting or silent when they tried Jesus. What kind of man was Joseph? Luke tells us that he was “good and righteous” and “looking for the kingdom of God”. Although he did not stand up for Jesus at his trial, he nonetheless, sought to honor him in his death by giving him a proper burial. This was to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had foretold: “He was cut off out of the land of the living ..and they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth” (Isaiah 53:8-9).

Matthew 28: 1-10

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And behold, there was a great earthquake;
for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven,
approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.
His appearance was like lightning
and his clothing was white as snow.
The guards were shaken with fear of him
and became like dead men.
Then the angel said to the women in reply,
“Do not be afraid!
I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified.
He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay.
Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
‘He has been raised from the dead,
and he is going before you to Galilee;
there you will see him.’
Behold, I have told you.”
Then they went away quickly from the tomb,
fearful yet overjoyed,
and ran to announce this to his disciples.
And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them.
They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage.
Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid.
Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee,
and there they will see me.”

In the Book of Revelations, the Lord Jesus speaks: “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one: I died, and behold I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades” (Revelations 1:17-18). No tomb in the world could contain the Lord Jesus for long. His death on the cross purchased our redemption and his triumph over the grave on Easter morning defeated death. What preserved the Lord Jesus from corruption? He was kept from decay and he rose from the dead by divine power. “My flesh will dwell in hope. For you will not let your Holy One see corruption” (Psalm 16:9-10). The mystery of Christ’s lying in the tomb on the sabbath reveals the great sabbath rest of God after the fulfillment of our salvation which brings peace to the whole world (Colossians. 1:18-20). Is your hope in this life only, or is it well founded in the resurrection of Christ and his promise that those who believe in him will live forever?
