The Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Celebration of Leadership event was developed to
recognize African-American accomplishments in the fine arts. Now entering its 13th year, the
Celebration of Leadership event recognizes the contributions of individuals who have influenced
our history and inspired generations. The ultimate purpose of this event is to raise scholarship
funds for students who have demonstrated an exceptional level of talent in the arts.
For over 9 years, performing arts scholarships have been awarded to students through the
generosity of Heineken USA. This year, from a record 131 applications (a 366% increase from a
year ago), 10 students will be awarded the CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts
scholarship. The CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship was established in 2006 and awarded to
five students. Due to the generosity of the Walt Disney Company, this year we will honor 10
talented students selected from an applicant pool which increased 240% from last year.
This year’s lifetime achievement honorees are Sam Gilliam, who is internationally recognized as
the foremost contemporary African-American Color Field Painter and Lyrical Abstractionist and
Tyler Perry, who is an American playwright, screenwriter, actor and director and producer of
indie films and stage plays.
Thank you to our generous sponsors Heineken USA, The Walt Disney Company, Verizon,
California Teachers Association, Time Warner, Mass Mutual, Edison International, News
Corporation.
This is a ticketed event.
