(Washington, DC) — Toward the end of a fiery debate with challenger Vincent Gray, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty attempted to address perceptions that he is arrogant and that he dismisses the concerns of many DC citizens and organizations. Fenty asked voters to give him a second chance, saying if they do not, he can only blame himself. Fenty continued by saying that mayors make mistakes and people can learn from their mistakes. He also asked for voters to believe in him again, to believe in DC and to believe in his campaign. Fenty trails Gray by as many as 17-points in some recent polls. As for the debate, the candidates took on a number of issues including the economy with Gray blaming the Fenty administration for failing to find ways to cut the high unemployment rates in the majority black neighborhoods east of the Anacostia. Fenty in turn said that it was leaders like Gray who failed to focus on education in the 1990s that has caused the high unemployment rates in the District’s poorest sections.
