Hundreds of couples said “I do” all over again at a special mass Sunday in D.C. The Archdiocese of Washington hosted a vow renewal ceremony at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to honor couples who’ve been married at least 25 years. Cardinal Donald Wuerl presided over the mass, as the more than 500 couples who attended renewed their vows. He said between the couples in attendance they had a combined total of more than 33,000 years of marriage. Wuerl said from those who he spoke with, the best advice was being ready to say both “I love you” and “I’m sorry” often.
The longest marriage bragging rights go to Pat and Margaret Morse. They’re high school sweet hearts who met in English class in Milwaukee. They tied the knot six years later in 1939 and Sunday marked their 73rd wedding anniversary. The crowd also included more than 400 couples who’ve been married at least 50 years. Sunday’s service included parishioners from across the D.C. region
