A week after he was gunned down in a carjacking, family and friends lay Desmond Jones to rest.

Desmond Jones was returning from a fast-food restaurant around 1:30 a.m. to his home at the Shadow Ridge Apartments, 12203 Old Walters, when two suspects allegedly shot him and stole his 2012 silver Chrysler 300, a four-door sedan with chrome rims and Texas license plate number DS1L815, authorities said.

Jones, a musician and a father of two girls, was taken by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died.

A group of about 50 friends and community members gathered outside the apartment complex where the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon to hold a prayer vigil for Jones, described as a hard-working family man.

“Desmond Jones was not in trouble and was not a trouble maker,” Bishop James Dixon, chairman of the Harris County Council for A Safer County, said during a news conference before the prayer.

Dixon said Jones’ wife and two daughters, ages 2 and 9 months, were inside their apartment when the incident occurred. Jones’ family was too grief stricken to speak Saturday.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 713-967-5810 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
