National Day of Service
September 11, 2012. Greater DC Cares recruits thousands of volunteers to
serve at more than 50 nonprofit organizations as a part of the United We
Serve. Participants will clean parks, revitalize playgrounds, sort food for
the hungry, and much more!
Pentagon Memorial
The memorial commemorates the 184 lives lost in the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 during the terrorist attacks. The Pentagon Memorial is free and open to the public 24 hours a day. Special services will be held for the families of the victims of 9/11 at the Memorial on September 11, 2012.
9/11 Unity Walk
September 9, 2012. The Unity Walk is an interfaith, cross cultural commemoration of the September 11 attacks. This year’s Walk will take place on Embassy Row in Washington DC. The Unity Walk offers participants the opportunity to learn about different faiths and cultures at open houses for churches, synagogues, temples, gurdwaras, and mosques; hear from renowned
speakers including Rev. Mpho Tutu and Arun Gandhi; enjoy diverse cuisines; and participate in a service project hosted by Unity Walk’s Interfaith Youth Action Group. The event is free and open to all.
U.S. Navy Memorial
September 11, 2012. The Memorial honors victims of 9/11 and fallen military heroes with a wreath laying ceremony led by the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2002 on the outdoor plaza. Also, an exhibit of photographs features USS New York (LPD-21), the naval ship forged with steel from the World Trade Center towers. New York-based photographer C.R. Richardson’s work includes dramatic images of the innovative ship, as well as candid shots of the crew and first responders who sailed aboard New York when making its triumphant entry into its namesake city on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Moment of Silence and Flags Across Arlington
September 11, 2012. Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. A moment of silence will be held at 9:37 a.m. to remember the 184 victims of this tragic event. Arlington County will hang U.S. flags from overpasses and buildings in a display of “Flags Across Arlington.” The cemetery is open and the public is welcome to visit.
