The state of Maryland is still months away from granting a gaming license for a proposed casino at National Harbor, but according to the Washington Business Journal, one company already thinks it’s the leader in the clubhouse

Citing a report from Bloomberg News, the Business Journal says that MGM Resorts is working under the assumption that it will be granted a license to operate and build Maryland’s sixth casino.

MGM officials submitted in May their proposal to build an enormous resort complex in southern Prince Georges County, the centerpiece of which would be a large casino. Their $800-million plan also includes a hotel, restaurants and 8,400 permanent jobs.

“We feel we’ve got the best proposal we feel we’ve got the best casino product in the country,” Lorenzo Creighton, the president of MGM National Harbor, said in May after his company submitted its proposal.

Two other companies – Penn National and Greenwood Racing – also are bidding on the project. Penn National, which operates gaming locations at Rosecroft Raceway and in Perryville, wants to add a full-service casino to its Prince George’s County racetrack.

Greenwood Racing, a Pennsylvania-based gaming company, bought through a subsidiary earlier this year, 22acres of land near Livingston Rd and Indian Head Hwy in Fort Washington as part of their plan to build their own casino.

A decision on awarding the casino will likely be made by the end of 2013.

Four casinos are currently in operation in Maryland, located at Rocky Gap, Perryville, Berlin and at Arundel Mills Mall. A fifth is under construction in Baltimore.
