Police have arrested and charged two people in connection to the shooting of an 8-year-old girl in DC.

Karie Brown, 19 and Demtrius Nathaniel Patten, 21 of Southeast, D.C. were arrested and charged with ‘Assault With Intent to Kill’, police said.

On Friday, eight-year-old Makayla Darden was shot while she was walking home in the 1200 block of Valley Avenue S.E. She was taken to the hospital and has since been released from surgery. Her condition is still not known.

“That’s my grandbaby fighting for her life,” said Beverley Darden, the grandmother of the girl, Makayla Darden.

“She don’t have anything to do with what goes on in these streets. She’s an innocent child,” she said.

Makayla was being innocent enough, simply walking from her aunt’s apartment at the Wheeler Terrace development on Valley Avenue S.E in the District to her mother’s apartment in the adjacent building on Friday afternoon.

As Makayla was crossing through the courtyard, gun shots were fired seemingly at random.

Makayla, who, according to her grandmother, loves gymnastics, was hit in the upper body around her chest and was rushed to the hospital.

“She’s only eight. Makayla was shot?” Darden remembered thinking when first hearing that her granddaughter was shot. “How is a child shot?” she asked.
