An eight-minute-long video was uploaded onto YouTube on Wednesday showing New York City policemen, uniformed and plainclothes, roughing up three African-American minors. Based on that video, Officer John McDevitt has been suspended from duty pending investigation, the NYPD announced on Friday, reports The New York Daily News.
As bystanders watched in horror at the officer’s bully tactics, many in the crowd were claiming that one of the youth was only 12-years-old, yelling out, “He’s 12, he’s 12!,” and “You guys…need a different profession. Go to war, this is not a war, this is a 12-year-old kid!,” according to Alternet.
One of the boys was handcuffed and forcibly pinned against a car by police when McDevitt, in plainclothes (pictured with fatigue jacket), swooped in, headed right for him and began pummeling him. Reportedly, the boys were detained on suspicion of assaulting another person with a cane.
The witnesses watching the abusive scene appear angered by the apparent brutality of “New York’s finest,” particularly since the wounds are still wide open with regards to the Eric Garner case. Garner was a Staten Island resident who was killed this past summer by a chokehold used by officer Daniel Pantaleo, who was not indicted for his crime. The case sparked incendiary protests across the country as voices joined together to put an end to police brutality.
Actress Sarah Doneghy, who caught the officer’s antics on her cellphone, posted a caption under her YouTube uploaded video:
“This happened today on my way to the post office. The kids were 12. They had supposedly pushed one of their classmates down. However when the victim was asked, he said those weren’t the guys. They were still taken away,” Doneghy added. “12. Years. Old.”
The charges against the minors were dropped by the time the video was uploaded, says The News.
There are also conflicting reports on the exact age of the boy who was struck. Police say he is 16, not 12 years old.
