NBC’s next live televised production will be The Wiz. The network will revive the classic film that made its debut in 1978, and starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross and Lena Horne. Production will be handled by Cirque du Soleil. Airing it on NBC is just the first step in the journey towards reviving the film. Exec producers Neil Mero and Craig Zadan are planning to bring The Wiz to Broadway for the 2016-17 season. “We love this yearly tradition and we’re more excited than ever to not only bring another Broadway musical to America’s living rooms, but also see it land on Broadway as well,” said NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Responds to RFRA Backlash
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has received a lot of backlash for the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Gov. Pence is claiming that the act is similar to the law that was signed by former President Bill Clinton in 1993, but many are arguing that the two don’t align. The Indiana RFRA gives for-profit corporations “free exercise” rights allowing them to defend themselves against lawsuits placed upon them by individuals, which people believe is an open invitation to discriminate. McDonald’s To Test Drive Serving Breakfast All Day
Fast food chains around the nation are testing out new ways to retain and expand their customer base. A few days ago, Burger King decided to make their popular Chicken Fries a permanent menu item. McDonald’s recently announced that they would try serving breakfast all day. The chain will start off with a 24-hour breakfast menu at different locations throughout San Diego. If the test goes well, they will expand to other locations. The chain usually stops breakfast at 10:30 a.m. because the grills aren’t big enough to contain both breakfast and lunch items. Read more.
34 Black and Latino Churches Sever Ties With Presbyterian Church USA After Same-Sex Marriage Approval
After the Presbyterian Church USA decided to stand on the right side of history and accept same-sex marriages, 34,000 Black and Latino churches have decided to cut their ties. Earlier this month, PCUSA decided to alter the language that defined marriage; noting it as simply a union between two people. Many leaders of predominately Black churches were vocal about the changes. “Arbitrary change of Holy Scripture is a flagrantly pretentious and illegitimate maneuver by a body that has no authority whatsoever to alter holy text,” said Rev. Anthony Evans, president of the National Black Church Initiative. Read more.
