Prom season is often about the glitz and glamour of the dresses, the music, and of course, the crown. But a teen from Newark, New Jersey managed to capture it all and inspire many more by designing her own gorgeous prom dress.

Steering away from cultural norms, Kyemah McEntyre sketched and designed her prom dress by herself. Pulling inspiration from all different backgrounds, the 18-year-old’s use of traditional African garb, among other designs, helped her look like the real prom queen at the Cicely Tyson School of Performing Arts in East Orange, New Jersey.

Oh, but that may be because she actually did take home the title. Slay Keyemah!

McEntyre is set to attend Parsons School of Art and Design – naturally – in the fall, but she isn’t waiting until school starts to share her talents. She also has a Big Cartel store with some of her own designs for sale, and plans to present her prom dress in a fashion show by the Walk With Me Lord Foundation.

The show, C.O.O.L (Children Overcoming Obstacles In Life) Down The Runway, will support at-risk youth. She plans to sell her paintings as well.

It’s great to see young people showcasing their talents in a positive way. Thank you Kyemah for reminding us all that Black girls indeed rock.
