Who knew uncomfortably reciting Easter speeches and participating in youth day at church could help turn you into a media mogul?

According to OWN network CEO Oprah Winfrey, being active in ministry at an early age developed the skills necessary for her successful broadcasting career.

“Church was our entertainment and church was our comfort, and church was our sanctuary, and being with church people was how we served our community,” she reflects in a new video, as part of her OWN “Belief” series, which takes cameras into rarely visited places in the world, in search of the origins of diverse faiths.

Winfrey grew up in the care of her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee, and attended Buffalo United Methodist Church.
