Sexual assualt survivors often struggle silently to heal but an Emmy-winning actress is breaking the silence by sharing her sister’s traumatic story

People cope with the horror of rape, sexual assault and abuse in different ways.

“How to Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis is now sharing the heartbreaking story of her sister’s destructive spiral into drug abuse and prostitution after being violated as a young girl.

On Wednesday, at a benefit for Stuart House, a nonprofit organization that supports victims of sex-abuse related crimes, Davis, 50, said,  “I have a sister, who, when she was 8 years old, put on some roller skates with her friend, went down to the corner store at one o’clock in the afternoon, went into the store, and was sexually assaulted in the store.”

In the video, posted on Pop Sugar, Davis continued, “She came home and she told my mom. My mom ran down to the store, started screaming at the store owners and they said: ‘Leave that man alone. He does that to all the little girls.’”

Police put the man in a car and took him away, but the pain of what happened didn’tgo away. As a result of the perverse act, Davis’s sister, now 39, fell into a cycle of drug abuse and promiscuity.
