Chicago mayor asks for police superintendent’s resignation:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday he has asked for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

The announcement at a news conference came amid angry protests in Chicago over the way the city responded when a white police officer shot a black teenager 16 times in October 2014. Dashboard camera footage of Laquan McDonald’s killing was released last week after a judge ordered it be made public.

Anonymous donors drop $500,000 check in Salvation Army kettle:

The holiday spirit hit one Minnesota couple in a big way over the weekend.

They dropped a $500,000 check into the Salvation Army kettle at a Cub Foods in Rosemount, Minnesota, on Saturday.

Yes, you read that right. Half-a-million dollars.

The couple wants to remain anonymous. They told the agency that they hoped their large donation would encourage others to be generous.

They also said they were honoring a family legacy — one of their fathers served in World War I and especially loved the Salvation Army Donut Lassies, who brought coffee and donuts to soldiers.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan welcome new daughter:

Mark Zuckerberg’s wife Dr. Priscilla Chan gave birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter, early last week.”Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children,” Zuckerberg and Chan said in letter to their daughter, which they posted on Facebook Tuesday. “We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.
