Tyler-Perry

Fox is set to air a two-hour live musical event, “The Passion,” from New Orleans hosted and narrated by Tyler Perry on Palm Sunday. It will tell the 2,000-year-old story of the last hours of Jesus Christ’s life on Earth. “Glee” musical director Adam Anders will executive produce.

At the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Perry, a devout Christian, shared what he hopes viewers take away from this special event.

“My hope and prayer is that it leaves people with a sense of hope-faith-forgiveness,” he said.

Anders spoke to the musical aspect of the show.

“It’s not a traditional musical; it’s a musical event,” he explained. “There’s no category you can put it in.”

Perry also shared that he couldn’t say no to the project when he learned it was being shot in New Orleans. He also noted that since the story will be told in a contemporary setting it will be good because “not only people who are believers but people who are from all walks of life” will appreciate it.

It was announced that country star Trisha Yearwood will play the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

“The Passion” airs Sunday March 20th on Fox.
