Georgia Representative and legendary Civil Rights activist John Lewis recently held a press conference to announce the Congressional Black Caucus PAC’s endorsement for the 2016 Presidential election. As he declared his support for Hillary Clinton, he savagely shaded Bernie Sanders.
“I know the south. I was born and grew up in rural Alabama. And during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I worked in the heart of eleven southern states from Virginia to Texas,” said Lewis.
He added, “I know South Carolina, I’m going there this weekend. I’m going truly because I believe there’s no one else better prepared to be President of the United States of America than Hillary Clinton.”
While Sanders may not have garnered the support of the Black Caucus PAC, he’s been endorsed by the former President of the NAACP and he’s been very vocal about his support for issues concerning African Americans including education, employment and combating police brutality.
The Vermont Senator has also shared that his vested interest in the plight of African Americans dates back to his involvement in the Civil Rights movement as a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during his collegiate days at the University of Chicago. Sanders also claims to have been arrested while protesting segregation.
According to Lewis’ account of history, Sanders is being less than truthful. “I never saw [Bernie Sanders] I never met him,” he said. “I was chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years, from 1963 to 1966,” he began.
“I was involved with the sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the march from Selma to Montgomery and directed (the) voter education project for six years. But I met Hillary Clinton. I met President (Bill) Clinton,” he added.
Sanders has yet to reply to Lewis’ claims. The two presidential candidates are prepping for last Democratic debate before the Nevada caucuses.
