Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis, the 4-month old infant who captured the nation’s heart as “Bernie Baby,” passed away from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) on February 25, his aunt Anastasia Lomas told The Associated Press.

“Oliver was happy, joyful and full of love, and he shared that with everyone he came into contact with,” Lomas said. “He was extremely healthy and was tragically taken too early by SIDS.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 3,500 US infants die suddenly and unexpectedly each year. We often refer to these deaths as sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID). Although the causes of death in many of these children can’t be explained, most occur while the infant is sleeping in an unsafe sleeping environment.

Oliver’s mother Souxsie Lomas posted a heartfelt Facebook post to her son:

“Oliver Jack Carter Lomas… I love you dearly, I love you most. I love you with all my heart and soul. I know that God will keep you near since God and truth are here.”

Michael Briggs, a spokesperson for the Sanders’ campaign, said the presidential candidate had been made aware of the baby’s death, and planned on issuing a statement.

“It’s very sad,” Briggs said.

GoFundMe campaign has been created by Oliver’s aunt to assist with funeral costs for baby Oliver and for counseling services for the family.

An outpouring of love and condolences from Sanders’ supporters flooded Twitter:
