New York City police officers claim the Police Academy gave them poor CPR training, leading to an internal probe that resulted in CPR instructor Officer Melissa Brown losing her gun and shield, reports the New York Daily News.
An unidentified source told the Daily News that Brown could be disciplined for the shoddy training of police cadets in the 2013 class.
This stems from former NYPD Officer Peter Liang’s testimony during his manslaughter trial. He was convicted on that charge Feb. 11 for the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley in a dark Brooklyn public housing stairwell.
Liang said he inadvertently fired his weapon. The bullet ricocheted off a wall and struck Gurley in the chest. As Gurley lay dying, Liang and his partner debated which of them would call their supervisor, and neither of them performed CPR.
The former officer said he did not receive proper CPR training at the academy. John Funk, a 2013 academy classmate of Liang, corroborated Liang’s testimony. Stories have emerged about the cadets receiving exam answers and practically no instruction on lifesaving techniques.
Liang’s attorney plans to file a motion soon to overturn his conviction, the Daily News reports. His supporters have taken to the streets, shouting that the shooting was an accident and accusing the NYPD of making Liang a scapegoat.
Meanwhile, Gurley’s girlfriend Kimberly Ballinger, who’s also the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city.
