#SkeeWee: Detroit AKAs Donate $5,000 To Help Test Rape Kits In Wayne County.

Detroit has a serious rape kit problem–1,350 of them have yet to be tested. But a local chapter of the historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated decided that a backlog that deep wasn’t acceptable. So they raised $5,000 to go toward testing some of those kits in hopes of helping sexual assault survivors find some type of justice.

The monies were given to the African-American 490 Challenge, a group that “supports efforts to raise $657,000 to test the remaining rape kits,” News Talk WCHB wrote.

“The African American 490 Challenge is an excellent vehicle for many rape kits to now be tested and a considerable number of survivors to have a chance at seeing their offenders brought to justice. With over 80 percent of the survivors associated with these kits being women of color, our chapter did not hesitate to give more,” said Peggy M. Brown, President of Lambda Pi Omega Chapter.

In 2009, more than 11,000 untested rape kits were found in a Detroit crime lab after it had been shut down in 2008 due to an influx of evaluation errors.(News Talk WCHB)

Belgium police claim that on Friday they arrested suspected terrorist Salah AbdeslamAuthorities believe that Abdeslam was the driver of the three suicide bombers who set off their explosives near the Stade de France, CNN reported.

During a shootout with Brussels police in an anti-terror raid,  Abdeslam suffered a minor leg wound, while four others were arrested. Earlier that day, fingerprints of the Belgian-born French citizen were found in a different apartment that had been raided three days prior, which helped police confirm that Abdeslam was not too far. When news hit of the arrest, Paris Mayor Anne Hilgado tweeted “”Congratulations to the police on the arrest of Salah Abdeslam.”

Last November, more than 130 people were killed in the City of Lights when Muslims radicals Abdeslam and his associates set off numerous bombs and shot AK-47s through out the city . (CNN)

Oh No! Blacks Less Likely to Get Lung Cancer Screenings

A new study found that African-Americans are less likely to be screened for lung cancer than whites.

Researchers from Yale found that this racial testing disparity may exist due to smoking patterns among Blacks. First, African-Americans are less likely to start smoking in their teens and when they do smoke, they consume less cigarettes a day than whites. Because we start smoking later in life, we also have less “pack years,” the number of packs smoked per day by years of smoking, which is what doctors use to access lung cancer risk, HealthDay News reported.

But this is a problem with only using pack years to determine who is at risk for lung cancer, especially since Blacks are more likely to die from the disease than whites, despite our lower risks. Not to mention, African-Americans are more like to be exposed to certain pollution and second-hand smoke that may heighten their risk of certain cancers.
