Two years after Boko Haram extremists kidnapped more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls, one of the Nigerian teenagers has been found, Reuters reports.
Activists have identified the victim as Amina ali Darsha Nkeki, the report states. She is the first of the girls rescued from the 2014 mass kidnapping that sparked the hashtag and search movement #BringBackOurGirls. A civilian vigilante group, working together with soldiers, found the girl and her four-month-old baby near the northeast town of Damboa.
A man claiming to be the girl’s husband was taken into custody as a “suspected Boko Haram terrorist,” the report states.
“Preliminary investigation shows that she is indeed one of the abducted Chibok School girls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on 14th April 2014 in Chibok,” army spokesman Sani Usman said in a statement.
Activists at #Bringbackourgirls, which have been campaigning for the girls’ release, confirmed her release. “She says all of the others are still in the Sambisa forest area. That they are heavily guarded,” the group said in a statement.
Hoses Tsambido, chairman of the Chibok Community in the capital Abuja, confirmed the discovery but did not provide details. “Her name is Amina Ali Darsha. She was found yesterday in an area of Kulakasha at the fringes of Sambisa forest. Right now she is with the military in Damboa,” he told Reuters.
In April 2014, the terrorist group kidnapped 276 girls from a school in northeast Nigeria. Many escaped, but at least 219 remain missing. The mass kidnapping was a part of the group’s “seven-year-old insurgency to set up an Islamic state in the north.” To date, the group’s reign of terror has resulted in the displacement of more than 2 million and 15,000 deaths.
