A young man was arrested after threatening to “maybe” bomb a police station.
Taking to Facebook to express his disdain for the men in blue, 21-year-old Deshawn Lanton wrote, “Maybe I should drop a bomb on Tha building to get rid of Tha rest of y’all,” followed by several crying laughing emojis and a police officer emoji. The Detroit native reportedly made the threat during the funeral of a slain Detroit police officer.
From Detroit Free Press:
According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court, the Facebook user behind the post is Deshawn Lanton, 21, of Detroit, who is on probation and has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for fleeing police, assaulting police, receiving stolen property and felonious assault.
Lanton is now charged with using the Internet to threaten the lives of law enforcement — a charge that stems from posts that he made last Friday during the funeral of Detroit Police Sgt. Kenneth Steil, who was shot while pursuing a carjacking suspect on Sept. 16. He died five days later.
During Steil’s funeral, at about 10:30 a.m., court records show, the Detroit police received information about a post made on a Facebook Live web stream under the screen name “Kane Pnotes.” The user was trying to sell a handgun with red tip bullets and a weapon light, and wrote: “Never jammed. Want it gone. comes with a case and bullets.”
The sale post for the gun was on a Facebook page, “Detroit sells Everything.”
About an hour later, another threatening post from the same Facebook user appeared, this time to the WXYZ live stream webcast of Steil’s funeral. It stated: “Maybe I should drop a bomb on tha building to get rid of the rest of y’all.” The post, records show, appeared during a live stream that showed the inside of the church and uniformed police officers entering the building.
If convicted, Lanton faces up to five years in jail. Read more about his case here.
