UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:
Receiving confirmation of pending good fortune is a joyful event. In such moments, how can we respond? The book of Luke tells of Elizabeth’s affirmation of God’s promise of the Savior, and Mary’s joyful praise to God for being chosen as the bearer of that divine promise.
Luke 1 is a true landmark moment in Christian history! Jesus transcended culture and religion. Ultimately, the blessing Mary was carrying was the hope of all humanity. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that her Son’s kingdom would have no end, could she have ever dreamed or imagined the full magnitude of what Jesus would mean to the world today?
Mary’s song should certainly give us a hymn of praise for the coming of Jesus, but it should remind us that Jesus came through a lowly and humble servant.
God, your promises are real and true. We depend on them for our lives and we depend on you for our transformation. Grant us humility, gratitude, and appreciation for all things, seen and unseen, that you do for us.. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
