UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:

People praise the achievements of others. What should be the subject of our praise? The psalmist taught that the Word and work of God the Creator are worthy of the praise of humankind.

CONCLUDING REFLECTION:

When people consider just the Word of God, they might arrogantly feel that they have enough within them to model the Creator and create works of their own doing. In this way, we seek recognition for the lessons we teach, sermons we preach, songs we sing, churches we build, and worship communities we establish. We can forget that the Word of God ought to serve as our reminder that all of those works are still the creative Word of God being done through His vessels. To ensure authentic praise from the proper posture, the psalm forces us to remember the inseparable unity of God’s Word and God’s work. Only a people who are adequately and consistently praising God will properly and appropriately serve God.

PRAYER:

God, your righteousness, justice, faithfulness, and uprightness are without question. Only in knowing you intimately and personally are we even in a position to understand what those things are and how they can be activated in our lives. We praise you for your sovereignty and your majesty. You are both good and great, and we are humbled to have the opportunity to serve your people, worship in your church, and praise your name. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
