Baltimore City Council passes a weakened version of the mandatory minimum one-year prison sentence for people who illegally carry guns in the city.
Council President Jack Young said: “This is not about color or race as some folk have suggested. It’s about illegal guns on the street of Baltimore.”
Some city council members were opposed to the bill, including Brandon Scott.
“Undoubtedly, the data shows that mandatory minimums in this country don’t work, and, in particular, they don’t work when it comes to young black people, and Baltimore is full of young black people,” said Scott.
The controversial bill was approved by a vote of 8-7 and Mayor Pugh is expected to sign bill into law next month.
