We all have our demons. Black-ish star Jenifer Lewis has been very honest about her in her new book The Black Mother of Hollywood detailing her struggles with bipolar disorder. She sought therapy, something she encouraged her good girlfriend, Whitney Houston, to do as well.
Lewis says that Houston refused, telling her that Jesus would help her. In her book, Lewis shared the good times she remembers with Houston who she starred with in the 1996 movie The Preacher’s Wife with Courtney B. Vance and Denzel Washington.
“Lordy, we laughed, sang and acted a fool together!” Lewis writers in the book. “I loved Whitney, not only for her extraordinary talents but for her warmth and humor. [But] it became more and more clear that she carried heavy burdens.”
Houston drowned in a Los Angeles hotel bathtub the night before the Grammy Awards in 2012. Her only daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown was found in similar fashion at her home in Atlanta in 2015 and died in July of 2015.
“I said to her, ‘You know Whitney, I went to therapy to take care of my challenges, and baby …’ Before I could say another word she whipped her head around and said, ‘Oh no Mama! My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will take care of me,’ ” Lewis writes. “She said it with such fervor and determination that I never brought it up again.”

Lewis currently plays Anthony Anderson’s mother on the hit ABC show starring Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne.
