This week on the Community Affairs Show Cheryl Jackson talked with Chris Spera of the DC Grays, Baseball Team about his involvement with the stage play “Toni Stone”, playing at Arena Stage. Toni Stone was the first African American Woman to play on a major league men’s team. During the segregated era Black Men weren’t allowed to play in the major leagues and women weren’t allowed to play in the major league nor the Negro league. Toni Stone broke that bearer.

Mr. Spera shared how his baseball team assist the Director of the stage play to bring that story to light. we discussed the plight of this history. Today, the sport of baseball still has not seen the turnaround of many successful African American players. Mr.Spera believes this is due in part to the lack of  recruitment in our communities and the lack of financial support for the sport on a collegian level.

Toni Stone runs in the Kreeger Theater at Arena Stage September 3 – October 3, 2021.  For tickets go to Arenastage.org
