Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is keeping that same momentum. Fresh off his run in Marvel’s “Wonder Man” series for Disney+, the talented brother is stepping into some big shoes. He is set to take on the role of John Creasy, a character made legendary by the GOAT himself, Denzel Washington.
On Tuesday, March 10, Netflix dropped the trailer for its new adaptation of “Man on Fire,” which pulls from the gritty novels by A.J. Quinnell. This seven-part series arrives on April 30. It shows Mateen locked into that focused, mysterious energy we know him for. In this version, Creasy heads to Rio de Janeiro looking for peace and a fresh start after serving multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s carrying the weight of PTSD, but when things go left in Brazil, he taps back into that specialized skillset. The mission is simple: protect his friend’s daughter and settle the score with the people who tore her family apart.
“Let me be very clear. You’re not gonna survive this,” Mateen’s Creasy says in the trailer. It’s one of the few lines we hear, but it tells you everything you need to know about the intensity he’s bringing to the screen.
Back in 2004, Denzel brought this character to life in a way that still resonates today. That film pulled in over $130 million globally and stands as a classic in the action genre. Now, Netflix is putting a fresh spin on the story with a heavy-hitting cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Alice Braga, and Paul Ben-Victor. While the original movie was a standout, this series dives deeper into Quinnell’s book series, specifically “Man on Fire” and “The Perfect Kill.”
