Hilary Banks May Be Getting Her Own Moment

Coco Jones may be stepping back into the world of Bel-Air, but this time, Hilary Banks could be the one leading the story.

Peacock is reportedly developing a new spinoff centered on Jones’ version of Hilary, the oldest Banks child from the hit reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The project is said to be titled Hilary, with Girls Trip and Harlem creator Tracy Oliver writing the series.

That already gives the idea some weight.

Coco Jones brought a different energy to Hilary Banks. In the original Fresh Prince, Hilary was funny, spoiled, stylish, and completely iconic in her own way. But in Bel-Air, Coco’s version gave her more layers. She was still fashionable and confident, but she was also trying to build her own name, chase her dreams, and figure out who she was outside of her family’s money and reputation.

That’s why a spinoff could actually make sense.

According to reports, the new series would follow Hilary after she accepts an unexpected job offer from celebrity chef Yvonne Durand and moves to New York. From there, she’s trying to prove she’s more than just a Banks from Bel-Air, while learning that success, friendship, and love in a new city all come with a price.

That’s a real setup, especially for this generation.

A lot of young adults know what it feels like to step out from under family expectations and try to make something happen on your own. You can have talent, style, connections, and confidence, but life will still humble you when you’re trying to build your own lane.

For Black viewers, this also matters because we still need more stories centered on Black women growing, failing, winning, dating, working, healing, and figuring life out without the story always being built around trauma. Hilary can be glamorous and still be real. She can be privileged and still be challenged. She can be funny, messy, ambitious, and human all at once.

That’s where Coco Jones could really shine.

She’s already had her own comeback story in real life, going from Disney Channel to being overlooked by the industry, then finding her way back through music, acting, and a grown woman image that people connected with. So watching her play a character trying to prove herself in a new space has a little extra meaning.

Of course, fans are going to be protective. Bel-Air came from a show that means a lot to the culture, and spinoffs can go left if they lean too hard on nostalgia without building something fresh.

But if Hilary gets the tone right, this could be more than just another extension of the Fresh Prince universe. It could be a story about becoming your own person when everybody thinks they already know who you are.

And honestly, that’s a story a lot of people can relate to.
