The History Channel’s miniseries “The Bible” is raising the ire of President Barack Obama devotees everywhere for supposedly making the series’ “Satan” character look just like the President. In response, the show’s producers are reportedly dismissing the Obama lookalike claim as “utter nonsense,” reports the Christian Post (CP).
Famed producer Mark Burnett and his actress wife, Roma Downey (both pictured below), are producing the series, which aired its third part on Sunday, and have thus far received millions of viewers. The producing pair contends that the actor who portrays “Satan,” Mehdi Ouzaani, is well-known in Morocco and has portrayed various biblical roles in the past, including playing “Lucifer,” way before Obama was elected president.
As soon as Ouzaani appeared onscreen, though, the Twitterverse and Facebook lit up with users claiming that the devil’s resemblance to Obama was intentional, with staunch conservative and racist Glenn Beck being credited for announcing the similarity between “Satan” and the President first.
The History Channel released a press statement responding to the Satan-Obama resemblance uproar:
History channel has the highest respect for President Obama. The series was produced with an international and diverse cast of respected actors. It’s unfortunate that anyone made this false connection. The Bible is meant to enlighten people on its rich stories and deep history.
Downey, who is known for her role as the gentle angel on the wildly popular ’90s TV series “Touched By An Angel,” which co-starred, Della Reese, told CP:
“Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love for our President, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try to discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible.”
The 10-hour, five-episode biblical drama, which centers on the stories of both the Old and New Testament, will culminate on Easter Sunday.
