Morgan Lake is considered to be a very lucky woman. Her story of survival after going through a dangerous car crash is nothing short of a miracle.

Friday, July 19th, Lake, 22, was driving in her car on the way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to visit family and friends. Traffic had come to a near standstill by the time Lake was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland.

Suddenly, Lake saw a tractor-trailer in her rearview mirror approaching from behind at a high rate of speed. Lake assumed the 18-wheeler truck would come to a stop but it did not. That’s when all out fear and panic settled into Lake as her car was struck from the rear by the huge vehicle.

According to police, Lake’s car hit the barrier at the side of the bridge. The impact pushed her car back onto the road. However, Lake’s car was pushed by the tractor-trailer again. The second hit propelled Lake’s car upward 3½ feet to the top of the concrete wall.

The car straddled the wall for a while before finally tipping over and plunging 40 feet from the bridge. Lake’s car began to completely fill up with water and she felt herself beginning to drown. Describing her ordeal in a telephone interview with the Washington Post, Lake said:

I thought I was going to die. I got myself together and decided I wasn’t going to drown, telling myself, ‘you can do this.’ I went from panic to calm.” (The Washington Post)

When the rescue crew arrived, Lake was then transferred to a trauma center in Baltimore where she was treated for a sprained ankle, a few fractures, and minor cuts. She was released from the trauma center the next day. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
