The heirs of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dynasty, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott (both pictured from left), and Bernice (pictured far right) are locked in a bitter court feud regarding the rights to the slain civil rights icon’s Bible and Noble Peace Prize medal, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The King sons currently are in charge of their dad’s estate and want to sell the valuable possessions to a private buyer. Bernice controls her late-mother Coretta Scott King’s estate and contests that her father gifted the medal to his wife and therefore it is part of her estate. Bernice is also against the sale of the items in question. Yolanda (pictured second from right), another King child who died in 2007, was known as a peacekeeper.
Back in February of last year, Bernice actually released a statement expressing her dismay over her brother’s intentions and the battle involving her father’s “most-prized possessions”:
“There is no justification for selling either of these sacred items. They are priceless and should never be exchanged for money in the marketplace. While I love my brothers dearly, this latest decision by them…reveals a desperation beyond comprehension.”
Bernice has also referred to the public fight she and her brothers are involved in as “an embarrassing chapter in our family’s history.”
The Bible accompanied Dr. King, who was a great orator, on his countless road trips to preach his inspirational words. The famed book was also used by President Barack Obama during his 2013 inauguration, and he also signed it. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Dr. King in 1964 for his brilliant architecture of nonviolent strategies in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement.
On Tuesday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney could decide which side of the King offspring will have control of the highly coveted items.
