Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay was joined by thousands of fans and loved ones on Monday night at a vigil for his late daughter Trinity Gay, who was shot to death on Sunday.

At the ceremony, which took place in Lexington, Kentucky, Gay pleaded with attendees to help put an end to gun violence. He said to the crowd, “As parents we do our best to raise our child the best we can. And sometimes things just happen; it’s out of our control. We only can look up and ask God why. Sometimes we don’t get an answer. I just want people to be safe and understand that we all have a life, and we all have dreams and when your fellow peer has a dream, it’s our job as brothers and sisters to come together and protect each other.”

The large group of mourners was estimated at 2,000 people, including two young women, Morgan Gaines and Alexa Garner, who were sitting in the front seat of Gaines’ car at a fast-food restaurant when she was shot in the neck around 4 a.m. on Sunday. One friend also revealed that Trinity knew the father and son who were involved in her fatal shooting.

Dvonta Middlebrooks, along with father and son Chazerae Taylor and D’markeo Taylor, were arrested for the murder of 15-year-old Trinity Gay on Monday in Fayette District Court on charges of wanton endangerment. Their bond was set and they’re due back in court Oct. 25.
