Today Simone Biles is making headlines not only for her impressive moves on the floor, but for not being afraid to call out the BS for what it is. She’s spoken out against the actions of the official USA Gymnastics organization before after the ousting of Larry Nassar, the team doctor who was accused of assaulting nearly 200 women and found guilty and later was sentenced for sexual assault. Yesterday, Biles took to Twitter to express her distaste for the organization once again following its decision to appoint Mary Bono as interim president and chief executive officer:
Bono is a former US Congresswoman who spent 15 years in the legislature until 2013. She won her first term during a special election to fill the vacant seat of her deceased husband, pop star and legislator Sonny Bono. She was recently working at a consulting firm in Washington D.C. before her joining USA Gymnastics.
Biles was sure to share a tweet in which Bono expressed her dislike for Nike’s decision to endorse Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest against police violence and racial profiling by taking a knee during the when the national anthem was played during NFL games. She also tweeted “#BoycottNike” at the height of the campaign.
