The holidays are quickly approaching and for some, it’s not ’tis the season to be jolly but to be more depressed. More people than you think to dread the holidays because of increased depression. Unfortunately, I know about depression and it affects all to well from a first-hand account. And as you know, there is no discrimination when it comes to depression. The unemployed, students, single mother as well as the head of a corporation.

I suffered from depression after three life-altering events that happened seemingly back to back. First the loss of employment, then becoming an empty nester and lastly relocating over 3,000 miles away. I remember my first holiday after having moved from N.C. to Washington state and it was such a horrible experience that I know the only way that I made it was through the grace and mercy of God but it wasn’t easy.

No one knew how to help me, especially being so far away. So, I thought that I would share a few ideas for anyone who doesn’t know how to help a loved one suffering from depression over the holidays. Tip 1: Be available. Just merely answering the phone or texting back when a depressed person calls will make a difference. Tip 2: Don’t scold someone or give unsolicited advice just remember the words of Marvin Sapp, shhhh, listen.

A depressed person’s spirit is already broken, don’t “help” by pointing out obvious problems.  Tip 3: Please don’t say things like,” God doesn’t give you more than you can bear”, or, “look on the bright side.” Tip 4: Remind the person that they matter and you care . Tip 5: Go visit your depressed loved one and try to get them out of the house for a while to take their mind off of there problems. Tip 6: Get the prayer warriors on the case. This is something that you don’t have to let the depressed person be aware of. These are just a few tips that come to mind. The holidays are quickly approaching and sometimes depression increases during this time of the year. What are your tips?
