Learn more about Anthony Brown:

Anthony Brown & group therAPy is one of the Top Ten biggest gospel acts of the last decade. The Washington, D.C.-based ensemble has scored three GRAMMY® Award nominations, six Billboard Music Award nominations,  three Dove Awards, and twelve Stellar Gospel Music Awards. Their catalogue of hits such as “Worth,” “Trust in You,” “I Got That,” and their current hit, “Speak Your Name,” have garnered over 700 million digital streams. An Essence magazine writer once hailed  leader Brown “as the next generation’s Kirk Franklin,” and The Washington Post’s Pop critic Chris Richards once cited him as “One of gospel music’s fastest rising figures.”

Brown hails from a long line of Baltimore, MD clergy. His father, Heber, is a Bishop, and his mother, Patrice, sang in the choir. He began playing piano at three and was active in music in the music departments at New Psalmist Baptist Church and then Shiloh Baptist Church. He studied classical voice and piano at  the Baltimore School for the Arts, and at Morgan State University where he was mentored by the esteemed late conductor, Dr. Nathan Carter.

While in college, Brown launched a gospel group, Answered Prayers. They backed major recording artists performing in the DMV region. “The group was the answer to my prayers – I was looking for some kind of vehicle to get songs out of my head,” he once told Washington Post writer, Stephanie Williams. When one of the original members died of cancer, the group found therapeutic healing in each other’s company. That’s when they changed their name to Anthony Brown and group therAPy, capitalizing the AP as a reminder of their Answered Prayer roots.

Brown’s childhood friend, Justin Savage, had some success producing another Baltimore gospel artist Jonathan Nelson’s breakthrough single, “My Name is Victory,” in 2008.  Brown and Savage then began working on group therAPy’s self-titled debut album. With some behind the scenes help from “Nobody Greater” singer VaShawn Mitchell, they landed a venture deal with Tyscot Records in 2012. Their debut radio single, “Testimony,” spent an astounding 74 weeks on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart and peaked at No. 3. It was named by the magazine as the longest running Top 10 Gospel Radio Single in 2013. It was a year of ‘firsts’ for the act as the album earned eleven Stellar Award nnominations and a Dove Award nomination.

Group therAPy’s sophomore set, Everyday Jesus, was released in 2015 to even greater accolades. It was propelled by the ballad, “Worth,” that spent 24 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart and was R.I.A.A. certified gold for sales of a half million copies. It generated their first Grammy® Award nomination, three Billboard Music Award nominations and a BET Award nomination. They swept the 2016 Stellar Gospel Music Awards,  and walked away with an unprecedented ten trophies, the most won by any artist in a single year. Among their prizes were  Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Worth.”

In 2017, Brown’s Key of A Music and Tyscot Records joined forces with Fair Trade Services to further expand group therApy’s brand and music. The new alliance produced their third album, A Long Way from Sunday. The project earned immediate critical and consumer acclaim, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart off the strength of the radio smashes “Trust in You” and “I Got That.” They followed with the equally successful, 2econd Wind: Ready, project that boasted the No.1 hits “Blessings on Blessings” and “This Week” in 2019.

Even during the 2020 global pandemic, group therAPy continued to crank out new music. Their Stuck in the House: The Pandemic Project featured the No 1 hit, “Help,” a comforting ballad that helped many fans weather the pandemic better. Now, in 2023, they are showcasing perhaps their finest work to date, Affirmations. The dozen soul-stirring tracks flaunt the dynamic outfit’s polished grasp of contemporary gospel music with subtle flourishes of Classical, Hip-Hop, Pop, Pentecostal, and even Celtic influences. The first radio single, “Speak Your Name,” is an enthralling anthem of praise. Other standout tracks include the bouncy street rhythm of “Up Up Up” and the festive singalong, “God’s Got Me.”

Anthony Brown & group therAPy have performed on a variety of national TV platforms including BET’s “Celebration of Gospel” and The Stellar Gospel Music Awards. They have also been featured on national and international platforms such as The ESSENCE Festival of Culture, Bishop T.D. Jakes’ MegaFest, the New Orleans Jazz Festival and more, Anthony Brown & group therAPy are undeniably one of the generation’s brightest  and biggest gospel acts.
