D.C.’s New STEER Act Targets Out-of-District Drivers To Curb Dangerous Driving

The new Strengthening Traffic Enforcement, Education and Responsibility Amendment Act (STEER Act) in D.C. aims to hold dangerous drivers accountable and reduce unpaid traffic fines, especially from Maryland and Virginia drivers.

Key provisions include allowing D.C.’s attorney general to sue drivers with large unpaid fines, installing intelligent speed limiters on vehicles of repeat reckless drivers, and implementing a point system that could result in vehicle booting or towing for excessive violations.
