The most important thing to avoid when cooking your Thanksgiving turkey is leaving it alone, experts say.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued its annual tips to avoid a Thanksgiving disaster, the most important of which is to not leave a frying, grilling or broiling turkey alone for too long.

Not following this advice can be a recipe for disaster on Thanksgiving and throughout the year,” CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said.

The CPSC says that unattended cooking is the top cause of kitchen fires, accounting for more than 40 percent of annual unintentional house fires every year since 2009.

Experts especially warn cooks to keep a close eye on turkey fryers, which have caused more than 125 fires or explosions over the past decade. If you’re frying a turkey, the CPSC says to never do it inside; always fry your turkey outside and away from your home.
