A young boy’s love of gospel music may have saved his life. Earlier this month, police say a man kidnapped then nine-year-old Willie Myrick from his southwest Atlanta driveway.He allegedly drove the boy around for some time before dropping him off unharmed in East Point.But Willie’s actions during those terrifying three hours are inspiring people around the country. Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, Wrongfully Convicted Legendary Boxer, Dead At 76

Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the boxer whose wrongful murder conviction became an international symbol of racial injustice, has died at 76. John Artis, a longtime friend and caregiver, said Carter died in his sleep Sunday. Carter had been stricken with prostate cancer in Toronto, the New Jersey native’s adopted home. Read more.

Many people are surprised to learn that a great painting from the 17th century was the work of a former slave of African descent. Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick Criticizes Federal Shutdown of Black FM Station

Federal agents shut down an unlicensed radio station in Boston Thursday, sending “shockwaves through Boston’s African-American community, where the station filled a vacuum on the airwaves after the station WILD-AM was sold,” Meghan E. Irons reported Friday for the Boston Globe. Gov. Deval Patrick sharply criticized federal agents for the shutdown, and said he tried to dissuade them, Irons and Michael Levenson reported Friday for the Globe. Read more.

Report: Over 100 Hate-Crime Murders Linked to White Nationalist Website

A new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center links people charged with the murders of almost 100 people to a single far-right website, according to the Guardian.The report, released Thursday, calls Stormfront.org the “largest hate site in the world” and “a magnet and breeding ground for the deadly and deranged,” the Guardian says. Since becoming one of the first online hate sites in 1995, some of its registered users have been linked to major killings, the Guardian says. Read more.
