The school district wasted no time in taking all of the necessary precautions to safeguard the student and employee population of the school against even the slightest possibility that the teacher’s husband could have contracted the virulent illness that has thus far claimed the lives of more than 4,900 primarily in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

Newton County Schools spokesperson Sherri Davis-Viniard added that the teacher’s classroom was properly decontaminated from top to bottom just as a precaution. Reportedly, the teacher will not be allowed back at the school, until the district receives medical clearance that she is safe to interact with pupils and staff members at the high school.

The Newton County school district expressed the following statement over Facebook to concerned parents:

This morning it was reported to our school system that a Newton High School teacher shared information with her students that her spouse, who worked in Sierra Leone, returned to the country yesterday. We have taken precautions to safeguard our students and staff upon receiving this information. Since that time, many parents have contacted us to express their concern given recent media coverage surrounding the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. All reports of this nature are taken very seriously, and we will continue to follow the guidance of the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Please know that we have initiated the necessary safety measures to protect our students and school community. Tomorrow your child will bring home additional information regarding the Ebola virus, including how to prevent the spread of it and other infectious diseases. Your child’s health and safety is always our primary concern. Should you ever have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s school.
