Destiny Owusu is a model who made a name for herself with no help from an agent or agency. According to her Instagram, God is all the management team that she needs. Won’t He do it?!

As an African woman in the fashion industry, Destiny is vocally proud of her skin color. So much so that she started the hashtag #IsYourMelaninOnFleek because she wanted “young girls and women to embrace the skin they’re in and love it without feeling ashamed”. If you’ve never seen her before, Destiny has this deliciously beautiful chocolate skin that makes clothing and makeup equally pop and come to life!

I want young girls/women to embrace the skin they’re in and love it without feeling ashamed.

I met Destiny last season at the presentation for Allison Mitchell during NYFW. Her clean shaved head and small yet effective stature stood out amongst the crowd. I immediately followed her on social media and was in for a pleasant surprise. She’s a clown! It is refreshing to see this beautiful human cut up and act a fool like one of the homies.

I want people to see that I’m about my work but I have fun too! I don’t want people to think I’m some stuck up, bougie model who acts like their [stuff] don’t stink. At the end of the day I’m human and I want my supporters to relate to me in every aspect of my life.

She has used her social media following to her advantage both to book jobs and to network and promote designers, models, makeup artists and photographers.

I’ve gotten 99.99% of my work from social media, haha. Social media has helped me so much from booking gigs, casting calls, networking events, and just meeting great people. I believe social media is a huge key in being successful.

She hopes to create a community that will one day morph into a collaboration for a larger scaled shoot or ad campaign.

Cool girl, right? You can find her this season walking in Chaz Aracil, 69 show, and the Ladaska Mechelle presentation during New York Fashion Week. One day, she would love to walk for Pyer Moss, Kanye West, Hood by Air, Mara Hoffman, Alexander Wang, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Her go-to style tip for the subpolar temperatures that have so gracefully touched our lives this fashion week is to layer up as much as possible and to keep it sexy in knee high boots.

[Over the knee boots] go with everything and you can manage to still pull off a sexy look even if you’re bundled up.

Although Destiny has managed to do a lot and make a huge impact via her social media following, her goal is to ultimately get signed with an agency. Good luck, lady!
