The shooter, who is now deceased, has been identified as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old from Texas who was just hired as a civilian contractor before the shooting.
nvestigators said they had not established a motive for the shooting rampage, which unfolded less than four miles from the White House. As for whether it may have been a terrorist attack, Mayor Vincent Gray said: “We don’t have any reason to think that at this stage.”
The FBI took charge of the investigation.
President Obama publicly spoke on the shooting:
“We will do everything in our power to make sure whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible,” President Barack Obama said. “We are confronting yet another mass shooting. And today it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital.”
