Study Finds That Blacks Are Not Calling 911 Over Fears Of Police Brutality
A new study released some pretty disturbing findings: Black people may not be calling 911 out of fear of being brutalized by the police.
According to the Journal Sentinel, researchers found that the 2004 beating of Frank Jude Jr. 12 years ago by off-duty Milwaukee police officers may have sparked the drop in calls by over 55 percent, 22,000 calls, in predominately black communities between 2004 and 2010.
“Something like the Frank Jude case tears the fabric apart so deeply and de-legitimizes the criminal justice system in the eyes of the African-American community that they stop relying on it in significant numbers,” the study’s lead author Matthew Desmond told the newspaper.
“That is a huge effect and it symbolizes that these are not isolated incidents because they don’t have isolated effects, they have community-wide effects and those effects can actually make the city less safe by driving down crime reporting and thwarting public safety efforts,” Desmond added.
Kentucky House Candidate Refuses To Apologize For Racist Posts About President Obama On Social Media
A candidate for Kentucky’s state House refuses to apologize for shocking images found on his Facebook page.
According to WDRB News, Dan Johnson has posted or shared numerous offensive material, including photos of a chimpanzee, labeled as a baby picture of President Barack Obama and pics of the First family with ape-like features. When pressed about the posts, Johnson tried to explain that they were in good fun.
“It wasn’t meant to be racist. I can tell you that. My history’s good there. I can see how people would be offended in that. I wasn’t trying to offend anybody, but, I think Facebook’s entertaining,” Johnson said.
“I looked this up. There has been no president that hasn’t had that scrutiny. Not one. I think it would be racist not to do the same for President Obama as we’ve done for every other president.”
Sigh…And Hhe still won’t apologize.
“I want to be myself. I would rather be myself than be elected as state representative of the 49th,” he said.
Even members of his own party are denouncing him. On Thursday, Mac Brown, Chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky, issued a statement:
“Dan Johnson’s comments and social media posts are outrageous and have no place in today’s political discourse. They represent the rankest sort of prejudice present in our society and do not in any way, shape or form represent the views of the Republican Party of Kentucky or the many fine candidates representing us on the ballot this November. I want to apologize to the members of Kentucky’s African-American community and assure them that this man’s opinions do not reflect those of this Party. We are proud to carry on our heritage as the party of Lincoln and we will continue to fight for the freedoms of each and every Kentuckian, regardless of race, to thrive and flourish here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”
