UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:

Responsible people are pulled in a multitude of directions in trying to take care of themselves and their families. Why, then, would one extend effort beyond self and family? Jesus teaches His disciples that loving acts to the forsaken and needy are really demonstrations of love to Him.

CONCLUDING REFLECTION:

Even though we are called to make a difference within our own circle of family and friends, we are also called to be missionaries and to extend care beyond our immediate parameters. Service to the poor may involve attending to physical needs, emotional needs, financial needs, or spiritual needs. The Word of God identifies the positive consequences for merciful behavior as well as the negative consequences for ignoring genuine needs. We may say we have faith, but faith without works is dead. The best way to serve others is to treat them as if we were serving Jesus Himself.

PRAYER:

Lord, please forgive us for the times when we have neglected to serve others, and thus, have neglected to

serve you. As we end this year and begin another one, please give us eyes that see the world as you

see the world so that we can serve the world as we serve you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
