UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:
People called to be leaders may question the motives of their supporters. How do these leaders know if their supporters’ motives are sincere? Jephthah discussed the inconsistencies in the behavior of his supporters and established conditions for his leadership.
CONCLUDING REFLECTION:
Most conflict stems from misunderstanding and miscommunication by one or more parties. Those who are too stubborn to seek reconciliation are reflecting an acute case of spiritual immaturity. Trust can be rebuilt through honesty, consistency, clear communication, consideration, and accountability. These characteristics result in fruitful leadership within the church. Finally, think before you speak. Do not make rash vows that will become a burden to be fulfilled.
PRAYER:
LORD, make us instruments of your peace, not daggers of division. Help us to place high value on others, no matter how insignificant or distasteful they may seem. And, LORD, please help us to bridle our tongues so that the words we speak and the vows we make are acceptable in your sight and not made out of emotion. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, oh LORD, our strength and our Redeemer. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
