Lesson Title: AMOS’S CALL

Adult/Young Adult Topic: FACING HOSTILITY

Printed Text: Amos 7:10-17

Key Verses: Amos 7:14-15 (NIV)

Amos answered Amaziah, I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:

At times we find obeying God’s direction to be in direct contrast to what others think we should do. Is it possible to remain determined despite the opposition? Amos committed to serving even in the face of negativity.

CONCLUDING REFLECTION:

A defining mare of a true believer in God is the determination to accomplish what one is assigned to do by God despite any hurdles, obstacles, distractions, or stumbling blocks that may hinder one’s progress. In order to accomplish this, we must determine not to be driven by human interests alone but to place God at the top of our priority list. People are watching to see how disciples of Jesus Christ respond in the face of challenge and trouble. Amos rose to the occasion and was a bold witness for God in his specific context. Are you a bold witness in your specific context?

PRAYER:

Oh LORD, when life’s circumstances try to knock us down, please keep us steady by your grace. And if we should stumble and fall along the way, please pick us back up and point us in the right direction so that as we walk through this life, our living will not be in vain. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
